The Sanctuary at Tissawassa: Anuradhapura

The Sanctuary at Tissawassa is located within the archaeological ruins of Anuradhapura. As the name suggests, it provides a sanctuary in the heart of the historic site. The colonial style of the building is its key drawcard. Converted from a British residence the building is restored tastefully to the colonial era. The large veranda that wraps the front of the building provides shade to each of the rooms that open onto it with views of the gardens. Lanterns which would once have been lit with oil light the building which looks lovely in the evenings.

The rooms are tastefully decorated with the colonial theme in mind which matches the building beautifully. You will feel like you are a guest in the colonial home during the British period of Sri Lankan history. Despite the heritage, the room is air-conditioned, the beds are comfortable and has all you will need.

Sri Lanka - The Sanctuary at TissawassaChairs that line the balcony are a great place to relax and reflect on the days exploration or perhaps practice some mindfulness. As the hotel lies within the sacred site, alcohol is prohibited, otherwise these balconies would be the perfect spot to have a glass of wine or gin and tonic to end your day. Instead a large array of freshly squeezed juices are available from the restaurant, which is highly regarded.

As the property is small and surrounded by gardens it is very peaceful. The only noises are the peacocks that wander the gardens and the cheeky monkeys. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all served in the central dinning room with a gentle breeze passing through.

Overall the property is a historic and comfortable sanctuary in the heart of the old city of Anuradhapura. Its location in the heart of the sacred site is unbeatable and provides quick access to the masses of history literally at your doorstep.
